A grey and gloomy day has been brightened by the arrival of two new books, just published! They’re both part of the Collins Big Cat series, in the Progress range of books for struggling readers. These books aim to tackle topics that will interest and engage older primary readers but are written in a way that is accessible to children who find reading tricky.
I really enjoyed researching and writing Blade Running – it’s about the history of amputee athletics and how the technology behind running blades has developed to the point where we can see incredible performances on the track today. Very pleased to see the brilliant Jonnie Peacock on the cover! And just in case anyone needs to be reminded of his gold-medal-winning performance, you can see it right here:
The Last War Horses describes how horses were used during World War I and the important role they played in bringing the war to an end. I had no idea how many different jobs horses were expected to do at the front, nor that as many as eight million died there. Again, doing the research behind this book was fascinating, especially as I was reading Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse at the time.
I really hope children enjoy reading these books as much as I did writing them!
