A. I recently wrote a book about art theft, which was fascinating to research.
Q. Where do you get all the information for your non-fiction books?
A. I always start in the library and search for as many book as I can find on the subject I’m going to write about. Then I move on to using the Internet but I’m very careful about websites I use – I need to know I can trust them and that the information is up-to-date and accurate.
Q. What did you want to do when you were little?
A. I always wanted to be a writer. I also wanted to own two dogs and live in Yorkshire, but one out of three ain’t bad.
Q. What’s your favourite children’s book?
A. Argh, it’s impossible to choose one! It changes all the time. But when I was younger I loved The Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren. I read it over and over and still have my copy of the book, but it’s falling apart now.
Q. Who’s your favourite children’s writer?
A. Again, this changes all the time. Recently I’ve enjoyed reading Philip Reeve, Patrick Ness, Liz Pichon and Anna Kemp.
Q. Where do your ideas come from?
A. Often they come from editors who have asked me to write on a particular topic! But my own ideas tend to come when I am out and about or talking to people. Something will spark in my brain and then I set off exploring the idea – this is why it’s good to walk around with a notebook!
Q. Why did you want to be a writer?
A. Because I’ve always loved reading. Books have always offered adventure, escape, laughter and empathy and I count them among my greatest friends.
